September 2017 General Meeting Minutes

Guest Speaker –21st. Century Community Learning Center Director, Priest River Lamana High School, Cherie Caldwell


Meeting The Chamber will import more workshops, These will be for members and non profits, the subject how to-better serve their businesses and also to compose packets for new members. There will also be a Membership drive.


Kerri Martin has offered that the Priest River Community Foundation host Christmas on Main. It was accepted by the Board at an earlier date.


21st Century Program

Cherie Caldwell 21st Century Director explained the program which would be for 8 to 12 year old’s, offer opportunities to students, will give grounded education and make global citizens. It is open to city and rural areas, and there will be bus services. This does not mean that they will all go to university, but may choose a technical curriculum or other means of educational activity. Parents should be involved. Federal grants have been approved and are renewed each five years and at the moment PRLHS is in its fourth year and will processed next year for another grant. The curriculum is large and some of the classes offered are – Enrichment labs that work with those who wish to go to a higher education. National Guard will offer self defense, there will be a writing class with the reading of an illustrated book and then having students write their own book which will be  hardback published, and then sent to libraries and other schools. Also on the agenda, outdoor survival, first aid, basic life skills such as cooking and sewing, physical fitness, automobile maintenance, guitar and media classes. She would like to have mentor’s that have other subjects of interest that further would help with the education of the students, please contact her. Children have to be part of the school district. Cherie also works with the Newport School district. Attendance last year was 25 but this year it is expected to increase.

Faculty and staff also participate with the program.

Thursday, November 2nd, there will a Steam Carnival, Priest River and Newport will offer a night with engineering, art and math with hands on science and art experiments. Peoples choice award will go to the best booth which will be awarded a scholarship for that team. Goal to get $200.00 for 1st. Place and $100.00 for 2nd. Place. There are door prizes. It will be held at the Priest River Lamana High School from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Local businesses will have tables set

for information and demonstrations.


Update on Oktoberfest.

So far there are 7 food and 7 craft vendors that have applied that are ready to attend, more are expected to apply before the event.


Business Update

Barbara would like to see the Chamber partner and support the school district,

she would also like to see how the Chamber can support the the small businesses in town and how we can help make the businesses more successful and she thinks the Board is on that page.



Jim Woodward – is running for current Sen. Shawn Keough’s Idaho Senate seat in 2018. Senator Kehoe has endorsed him seeing that she will not seek re-election.

Jim is a Republican from Sagle and operates Apex Construction, is a 3 year board member at Northern Lights Cooperative, a graduate of Bonners Ferry High School and U of I. He has served in the Navy, seven years active in submarines and 14 years as a reservist. He has a wife and two children. He has worked with legislator’s getting road projects built, also securing additional funding for schools and increasing opportunities for higher education.

Mike Boeck – is a Republican candidate for Idaho House Representative Seat A in District 1, he is a fourth generation North Idahoan and with his experience and good track record in gets positive results. He will have a common sense approach to solving problems in the private sector. Some of his accomplishments are – is recognized by Bonner County as a certified Forester, Retired Major, 20 years in the National Guard, managed his own development corporation (M&D Development), member of Redifit. His hobbies and Interests include hunting & fishing, off road sports, Acoustic instrument builder and musician, hiking and coaching kids in sports.


Chamber information in the Priest River Times

Robin discussed have a portion of the paper having a special Chamber news section in  the paper each week. 20 to 25 businesses paying approximately $25.00 would be able to advertize. Robin would bring in a draft at the next General Meeting for perusal.


Oktoberfest Steins

Carlene demonstrated the commemorative steins to be sold at the event, It would have the date on one side and the Chamber Logo on the other. Cost would be $15.00 and in each stein would be a free drink ticket redeemed at participating establishments. Anne requesting that zip codes be written on the back of tickets which would tell the Chamber where the public came from.


Frank Pangburn requested a statement from Timberdays as to how the event turned out.


Idaho Forest Grooup and Aerocet are hiring.



The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 pm


The next General Meeting will take place on October 24th.
